Rain Monitoring in Red Rock Canyon
The Southern Nevada Climbers Coalition is launching a vital initiative: installing a strategically placed rain-monitoring stations close to climbing areas. The first pilot station will be installed in Calico Basin. This station will monitor rainfall in the Red Springs and Kraft Mountain area, providing real-time data to inform climbers when the rock is unsafe/unstable to climb on. Other locations closer to the canyons are being discussed with local agencies as well, your donations will help us make this a reality.

The data will be uploaded hourly to wetrockpolice.com in an effort to dramatically improve the information currently being represented across Red Rock Canyon.

Aztec sandstone, the primary geological feature of Red Rock Canyon, can lose up to 75% of its strength when wet. As a sedimentary rock, it absorbs water like a sponge, dissolving the cemeting agents between the sand grains and weakening its structure. This poses immediate risks to climbers and belayers.
